Emma Stephens-Black is an Endorsed Midwife, Registered Nurse, and mother to 3 beautiful boys. With over 15 years of university study and a career that spans both complex clinical nursing and full-scope midwifery, Emma brings a rare depth of experience to the care she provides.
Emma’s journey began in the UK, where she completed her Adult Nursing at Coventry University in 2008. After relocating to Australia, she went on to complete postgraduate qualifications in Clinical Nursing at the University of Notre Dame, followed by a Graduate Certificate in Stomal Therapy, Wound and Continence Nursing through the Australian Association of Stomal Therapy Nursing. This saw her become a specialist in wound care, stoma management, and continence, skills that would serve her well in later surgical and maternity care roles.
Emma progressed into leadership early, taking on roles such as Acting Nurse Unit Manager and Hospital Coordinator at Bunbury Hospital. Her time as a Surgical Ward Manager gave her a deep appreciation for systems, safety, and advocacy. These years of clinical nursing laid the foundation for her keen eye for clinical detail, her ability to assess situations quickly, and her unwavering dedication to advocating for women’s health and wellbeing.
Her transition into midwifery came from a calling, a desire to support women more holistically and walk beside them through birth and beyond. She completed her Graduate Degree in Midwifery at Curtin University, and more recently, her Masters in Advanced Midwifery at Curtin University (2022–2024), alongside further qualifications in Prescribing for Midwives (Griffith University) and Obstetric Ultrasound (The University of Melbourne).
While Emma initially set her sights on a PhD exploring secondary trauma in midwives, she made a conscious choice to focus first on building something tangible and meaningful for the women in her community.
